An Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu, resumed work as the Commandant of the Police Staff College, Jos in Plateau State, a visibly chastened man.
There were allegations in the past that Mbu carried out dirty political jobs for his paymasters, with the crudest of tactics. He was posted from Oyo to Rivers to Abuja and to Lagos, to do the bidding of his political paymasters on different occasions and during different political climates, his critics say.
One story alleged that he was the errand boy of immediate past first lady, Patience Jonathan. When she barked, the grapevine alleged, Mbu quivered and then went to town to get the job done.
But he now has a different job in the polity. From ordering police officers about on errands, Mbu will now become a glorified class teacher. And he says he doesn’t mind one bit.
“I am still in the Police Force and I was not posted to Jos on punishment.”
He added, “I was posted to Jos to come and transform the college. I did not resume early because I was on leave. I am still a serving police officer and I love my job. I do my job like a professional and while working, I do not know a wife, brother or friend. I am proud to be a police officer”.
There was also the need to look on the brighter side.
“This college is the highest police training institution in the country and it is a privilege to be posted here. Our Inspector- General has promised to ensure that training is his priority and that is why I was posted to help transform the college”.
Truer words have never been spoken, we reckon.
